Refashioned Apron

Apron Fabric

My first foray into the thrift store stash involves a curtain and a pillowcase that happened to coordinate fairly well. I’d been wanting an apron, because when I wash dishes, I generally end up washing the floor and myself along the way. So I took the pillowcase apart, made trim from the curtain, and voila!

Anyone who has ever been in a fabric store can tell you fabric is not cheap. So how could a budding seamstress like myself stock up on fabrics and not break the bank?

Tutorial: Tote Bag

Tote Bags

Making a tote bag is a great way to both use up scrap fabric and promote reusable shopping bags. I like to choose a fun print and a coordinating solid color to line the bag. Quilters’ “fat quarters” are almost but not quite big enough to use for these totes, and I’m thinking about playing around with a fat quarter version of this bag that would involve piecing together the main fabric.

Sewing Projects

My sewing machine

For those of you who might not know, I inherited a sewing machine, mounted in a cabinet, from my grandmother. Mom had the manual; stuck between two pages was the receipt for its purchase by my grandparents in 1976.

It’s been idle for years.

So, with Mom’s help, I’ve learned how to thread it, changeĀ  the tension, wind bobbins, and get into general mischief with it. I purchased a copy of Sew Everything Workshop, and have completed several of the projects in it (with a couple of monumental failures, but I’m pretending those never happened). I’ve sewn a few things just for fun, but lately it’s been turning into a passion. In roughly three evenings of sewing over the last two weeks, I have completed several projects that I deem noteworthy. Read on to find out if you agree!
